A Mobile Magazine App Increases Membership Value For The Association of Certified Fraud Examiners

Goal

Fraud Magazine is a monthly magazine produced by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE), the world’s largest anti-fraud organization and provider of anti-fraud training and education. The ACFE staff wanted to create a digital magazine app to serve as a companion to the print version, which members automatically receive with their membership fees. The goal of the app was to drive new memberships and offer an additional option for easily consuming Fraud content.

Strategy

LRM conducted a workshop with the Fraud Magazine art director and associate editor to build a wireframe for the app. The workshop was an opportunity for our team to brainstorm the app’s user experience, analyze Fraud’s editorial workflow and learn how we could collaborate on a month-to-month basis. An important differentiator for the app was that it needed to include additional resources and content from the print magazine. It needed to act as a utility by providing a convenient, useful service to its users. Considering this, we collaborated with the ACFE team to design the app to include additional content like “Top 10 Articles,” “Top 10 Global Fraud,” and a section that provides a guide to the ACFE annual conference.

A seamless editorial workflow between the LRM and Fraud Magazine design teams was important to the success of this project. The digital app needed to be published in tandem with the print issue and online content. Together, we built a workflow that involves print content being written and designed by the Fraud team before being passed off to LRM to design the digital app. All content—print, app, and web— are then published at the beginning of each month, offering users a seamless content experience between all devices.

Results

The app is built using HTML, which makes the content responsive to all devices and eliminates the need to design multiple versions of the same issue to fit screen sizes. It is also one of the first HTML-only apps from Twixl in the App Store. Since its launch in May 2017, the Fraud Magazine app has served as an engaging marketing tool for the ACFE team at conferences and events, allowing them to start conversations about the benefits of membership. In addition, access to the entire Fraud Magazine archive has served as a powerful educational asset for ACFE members by teaching them about trends, news and breakthroughs in the anti-fraud industry.
